Bluray Review - The Great Mouse Detective Mystery in the Mist Edition

On October 9, 2012 fans can experience Disney’s greatest little mystery in High Definition picture and sound, and go on a great big adventure as “The Great Mouse Detective” Mystery in the Mist Edition” arrives on 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack and HD Digital. When the diabolical Professor Ratigan kidnaps London’s master toymaker, the brilliant Basil of Baker Street and his trusted sidekick Dawson try to elude the ultimate trap and foil the perfect crime. This family classic on Disney Blu-ray proves big heroes come in small packages.

This is my first time seeing this movie and my first experience with Blu-Ray. I can not believe that I did not experience Blu-Ray sooner because the sound and the graphics are definitely a step up from regular DVD.  This movie was originally made in 1986. It will be released again on Oct 9. I highly recommend this movie it is a classic good vs evil story. This movie appeals to people of all ages, to my surprise my 14-year-old daughter also loved it and she was cheering for little Olivia the entire time. My favorite character is little Olivia Flaversham, she is sweet and innocent yet tough when she has to be and that makes her the perfect Disney character. Little Olivia is the most adorable little mouse, next to Mickey and Minnie of course. My favorite part was the end when they all got together to fight the Evil Professor Ratigan, who is voiced by the incredible Vincent Price.

Disney is famous for their attention to detail and this movie is no different, be on the lookout for a small appearance from Dumbo. I thought that was a really nice surprise.

I really enjoyed the bonus content on the Blu-Ray mainly because Disney does a great job of incorporating education along with fun. I am homeschooling so I am always on the lookout for learning opportunities.

First up is “So you think you can Sleuth” This gives you a short background and education on the history of criminal behavior and how private detective came to be in England and America. It was very interesting to learn how crime has evolved and so has the way we fight crime.
Next up we have the ever popular sing along. My daughter who is very artistically inclined loved the sing along. I know younger children will love to watch the words on the screen as they sing along to a song they just heard in the movie.

Last but certainly not least in the bonus content category we have my personal favorite, the making of the movie. Since this movie was originally made in 1986 it was interesting to see how animation was done before the computer age of today. They interviewed some of the artists and voice over actors and you get to see behind the scenes footage and learn how they join the drawings together to make a scene and how it is much harder to put an animated scene together then I originally thought. I also like how they incorporate the voice over actors actual movements and mannerisms into the animated characters. It’s amazing the amount of time and dedication that goes into making an animated film.

Overall I give this movie a solid B. It is often overlooked by Disney Fans but I feel this is one you will want to add to your Disney library.
