Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Returns to Lightning Lane Ahead of Magic Kingdom Reopening
Hold onto your hats and glasses, because Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is officially chugging its way back into the spotlight at Magic Kingdom. With its long-awaited reopening just around the bend, the wildest ride in the wilderness has now reappeared as a Lightning Lane option in the My Disney Experience app, giving guests their first real chance to start planning their return trip through the frontier.

After closing for a major refurbishment back in January 2025, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen on May 3, 2026, marking nearly 17 months of downtime. Now that the reopening date is locked in, Disney has added the attraction back into the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system as a Tier 1 option, right alongside heavy hitters like Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Guests will once again be able to select Big Thunder as one of their top-tier picks, making it a hot reservation as opening day approaches.
This refurbishment was not just a simple tune-up either. Disney has completely replaced the track, introduced new trains, and refreshed various show elements throughout the ride. The Rainbow Caverns in the opening scene are getting a noticeable transformation, while updated Audio-Animatronics, new gold props, and restored effects aim to bring the attraction back to life with a little extra sparkle. We have even seen testing of new steam effects near the front of the ride, adding an extra layer of atmosphere to the experience.

In a move that is sure to make families extra happy, Disney is also lowering the height requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches following safety updates and improvements. That means even more guests will be able to hop aboard the runaway train and experience the thrills of Big Thunder together.
With Lightning Lane now live in the app and reopening day fast approaching, it is safe to say this frontier favorite is about to become one of the most in-demand reservations in Magic Kingdom. If you are planning to ride when it reopens, you may want to act fast… because this train is leaving the station with or without you.
