Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Reopening Date Revealed
The wait is almost over for fans of the “Wildest Ride in the Wilderness.” After a lengthy closure that has lasted over a year, Disney has officially confirmed when guests can finally board the runaway trains of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad once again.
The Reopening Date Following weeks of intense testing with weighted water jugs and empty ride vehicles, Disney has announced that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will officially reopen to guests on May 3, 2026.

In a clever nod to the high anticipation surrounding the project, Disney shared a tongue-in-cheek video centered on the recently reopened Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. The video playfully highlighted the mountain of comments from fans who were using the Buzz Lightyear news to demand an update on the coaster instead. The video concluded by rewarding that persistence with the long-awaited May 3 return date.

This wasn’t a typical minor refurbishment. Over the past year, the attraction has undergone significant track work and system upgrades. While the core experience remains the classic Frontierland coaster guests love, the extensive downtime allowed Imagineers to:
- Replace sections of the track to provide a smoother ride experience while maintaining the signature “clank and rattle” of the mine trains.
- Refresh scenic elements and show effects throughout the mountain.
- Update the ride’s technical infrastructure to improve reliability and efficiency for the future.

With the May 3 opening just a few weeks away, the attraction is expected to be a major draw for the late spring season. It will likely return as a selection for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and fans should keep an eye out for potential soft openings or Passholder previews in the days leading up to the official debut.
The return of Big Thunder Mountain marks a major milestone for Magic Kingdom, bringing one of the park’s most iconic “mountain” peaks back into full operation just in time for the summer crowds.
