New Notice of Commencement Suggests Big Thunder Mountain Closed for Refurbishment till 2026
A new Notice of Commencement has been filed for the ongoing refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom. This signifies a key step forward in the extensive project, which is scheduled to commence in early 2025.

The notice designates Coastal Steel Inc. as the contractor for the project, which is categorized as “General Construction.” The document’s expiration date, set for March 13, 2026, reinforces the expectation that the refurbishment could last until spring of next year.
The latest filing coincides with a previous permit issued to DPR Construction, both set to expire on March 13, 2026. Given DPR Construction’s specialization in intricate structural projects, it’s likely that the refurbishment phases are being scheduled in tandem by Disney’s major contractors.
The extended timeline for Coastal Steel Inc.’s involvement, with the new expiration date set for March 2026, contrasts sharply with the previous permit’s August 8, 2025 deadline. This suggests a more extensive project scope than originally anticipated.
This refurbishment is poised to be the most extensive overhaul of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad since its opening. While Disney remains tight-lipped about the specifics of their promised “new magic,” the numerous permits and extended timelines point to a significant undertaking.
The Walt Disney World website states the following about the refurbishment:
“Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will temporarily close for refurbishment on January 6, 2025. The attraction will reopen with a little bit of new magic in 2026.”
