Barbie Movie Smashes Records, Surpasses $150 Million Opening Weekend Box Office
The newest Barbie movie has Warner Brothers living in the dream house after the film posted the biggest box office opening of 2023. Right now the film is on track for a 155 million dollar weekend, but some estimates have the film as high as 160 million. The Greta Gerwing film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.
Oppenheimer is also exploding at the box-office with a cool 80.5 million dollar take, making this one of the biggest weekends of the year. Both films are surely benefitting from what social media has dubbed “Barbenheimer.” Droves of devotees have turned both films into a major social event, creating a buzz that is marketing departments dream come true.

Oppenheimer and Barbie are putting up Marvel/Star Wars level numbers, but these are clearly not super-hero films. Outside of Spiderman: No Way Home, this is the highest foot traffic for a theater film since breaking from the pandemic. In fact, only Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are ahead of the now 12.8 million admissions to Barbie.
Barbie cost a net of $128M while Oppenheimer cost around $100M. Both of those budgets are before advertising and promotions. The only question mark surrounding both of these films is will “Barbenheimer” fever carry into the following weekend when Haunted Mansion arrives in theaters?
