Sumatran Tiger Cub Bakso Celebrates First Birthday at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Today marks an important milestone at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as Sumatran tiger cub Bakso celebrates his first birthday. For a year, Bakso has captivated guests with his playful spirit, growing into a confident young tiger who serves as a vital symbol of hope for Sumatran tiger conservation worldwide.

Born to mother Sohni and father Conrad, Bakso arrived as a small bundle of fur with faint stripes and bright blue eyes. Today, he weighs over 140 pounds and proudly displays his adventurous spirit on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Fun fact: Bakso’s name was inspired by the Indonesian word for “meatball,” and like all tigers, his unique pattern of stripes means no two tigers look exactly alike.

A Collaborative Conservation Success
This celebration is a significant achievement made possible by the dedicated animal care experts at Disney. The cub’s journey has been guided by skilled veterinarians, nutritionists, and animal keepers who provided exceptional care, from preparing his specialized meals at the Animal Nutrition Center to personalizing his habitat.
With fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers estimated to be left in the wild, every birthday is important. Bakso represents the success of collaborative efforts between Disney and the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan (SSP), which works to bolster populations of endangered species in managed care.
Beyond the park, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) reinforces this commitment. As part of the Disney Planet Possible initiative, the DCF has provided more than $4.5 million to organizations protecting tigers and their forest habitats since 1995. The thriving health of Bakso serves as a powerful reminder that dedicated care combined with conservation efforts can make a difference in securing a future for the species.
