Early Days and First Check-Up:

Baby Bakso

Bakso, whose name is inspired by the Indonesian word for meatball, entered the world a curious and active cub. His first veterinary check-up revealed bright amber eyes, sharp baby teeth, and quick reflexes, assuring the animal care team of his healthy development. While Bakso was briefly away for his exam, his mother, Sohni, enjoyed some enrichment activities, highlighting the careful attention to both mother and cub.

Exploring His World:

As Bakso grew, he began exploring his backstage “playroom,” encountering new experiences like scent enrichment with lemongrass. This introduction to new smells was crucial for his sensory development and overall well-being. He also celebrated milestones like turning three months old, marking significant progress in his young life.

Solid Foods and Outdoor Adventures:

A major milestone arrived when Bakso ate his first solid food – a meatball! This crucial step in his development signaled the beginning of weaning and prepared him for the “big cat habitat.” His diet, carefully curated by the Animal Nutrition Center, ensures he receives the necessary nutrients for his growth. Bakso also ventured into the outside yard of his backstage habitat, practicing essential tiger skills like jumping, rolling, and pouncing. This “pre-school” for cubs helped him hone the skills he’d need for his future home.

Swimming Lessons and Independence:

Bakso’s development continued with preparations for swimming, a critical skill for his eventual debut on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Keepers introduced him to the pool area, gradually increasing the water level to acclimate him. Throughout these new experiences, Sohni remained a constant presence, offering guidance and reassurance. Bakso also continued to grow more independent, exploring his backstage habitat with increasing confidence, though always returning to his mother’s comforting presence. He enjoyed playing in hay piles, practicing his pouncing and camouflage skills, and engaging with various enrichment items.

Training and Growing Confidence:

Bakso’s training with his keepers has been essential for his development. Using positive reinforcement, the team is preparing him for routine care, including voluntary participation in medical exams. While still hesitant about some tasks, Bakso’s trust in his keepers is evident. He’s also becoming more confident in his abilities, though swimming and other significant steps will happen at his own pace.

The Big Day: Maharajah Jungle Trek Debut:

After months of preparation and milestones, Bakso’s big day finally arrived! He made his debut on the Maharajah Jungle Trek alongside his mother, Sohni. This momentous occasion marked the culmination of the dedicated work of the animal care experts and celebrated Bakso’s growth from a tiny cub to a confident young tiger. His presence serves as a beacon of hope for the endangered Sumatran tiger species, representing the vital conservation efforts of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and its partners. Bakso’s journey is a testament to the power of care, patience, and the magic of witnessing nature unfold.
