‘Avengers: Endgame‘ Writers Tried To Save Tony Stark/Iron Man. Endgame Writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, had to make some of the toughest decisions regarding “who will stay and who will go” while writing the script for Avengers: Endgame.
“We weren’t there to just kill characters off,” said Markus. “We were told, ‘If the story demands it, you can take people off the board. But if there’s a good story to be told and no one dies, go ahead and tell that one too.’”
“In Endgame, we were trying to finish arcs and for Iron Man/Tony Stark to give up his life and sacrifice himself for the good of the universe seemed like a really good narrative closure for the billionaire playboy who had been learning over the course of several films (to be a better person),” he added.
There were many different iterations of Endgame that were discussed, but there was one major character death that was going to end in a 50/50 chance despite any other deaths that were expected to occur.
“It’s a topic of conversation that we all — Joe and Anthony Russo and Kevin Feige and ourselves — had together,” McFeely said. “We didn’t waver very much. I think we talked early on about how we could have gone either Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) or Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) on that cliff on Vormir. But we felt Black Widow’s death was better for the arc we were trying to give her.”
Many fans are holding out hope that Iron Man may return in the form of an Artificial Intelligence Program similarly to J.a.r.v.i.s., F.r..i.d.a.y. and E.d.i.t.h. in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but with a holographic interface played by Robert Downey Jr. Marvel has not confirmed if RDJ plans on making future appearances in the MCU despite the passing of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame.
If the comics are any indication, there is always a way to bring a character back, unless you are Uncle Ben of course. (Sorry, had to go there) Only time will tell if Marvel plans on bringing back Tony in any capacity, but we do feel Iron Man‘s death was justified and a good way for Robert Downey Jr. to exit his time at Marvel that spanned over a decade of films and cameos.
