'Avengers: Endgame' Teases Appearance of Namor in the MCU

Avengers: Endgame‘ Teases Appearance of Namor in the MCU. Eagle eyed, or ear’ed in this case, Marvel Fans were quick to point out what seemed to be an Easter egg left by Okoye, General of Wakanda, in Avengers: Endgame.

In the begining portions of Endgame, Natasha/Black Widow is hosting a virtual meeting with various members of the remaining Avengers crew including: Nebula and Rocket, Okoye, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and Rhodie/War Machine, to check in and report any updates or disturbances in their various quests. One line that caught the ear of some Marvel Fans was Okoye and Natasha’s comment about a disturbance in the Atlantic.

Okoye’s reply to Natasha’s inquiry about “handling it” was, “It’s an earthquake under the ocean. We handle it by not handling it.” to many fans this would seem unimportant. That is, if the disturbance had not occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, which happens to be where Atlantis is located in the Marvel Comics.

'Avengers: Endgame' Teases Appearance of Namor in the MCU

Now, many fans of superhero comics are aware of DC’s Aquaman, but Marvel has had their own Prince of Atlantis who has been around MUCH longer than his DC counterpart. Prince Namor, also known as the Sub-Mariner.

Prince Namor may not be in your top ten known comic characters, but his appearance in the MCU is not unwarranted. It’s also no coincidence that Okoye is the one to deliver this line, since Namor was constantly at odds with T’Challa and is one of his primary advisories throughout the Black Panther comics. This has led many fans to believe Namor will appear as the primary villain in the untitled Black Panther 2.

So much so, that one Marvel Fan went to the trouble of creating a fan made teaser poster with a potential title for the Black Panther sequel. @Bosslogic shared this image on their verified Twitter account:

The title it definitely alluring and even teases at Namor’s appearance in the sequel by showcasing his trident and is designed with underwater imagery in the lettering for the film. The title also acknowledges the King of Wakanda and potentially the King of Atlantis. Though this is far from official on Marvel’s end, the image has fans buzzing online.

It was highly speculated that Marvel would announce Black Panther 2 during their Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con 2019. Fans were very disappointed that the previously announced Black Panther 2 was not revealed to be in the line up for Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 of the MCU, but that we will likely see the King of Wakanda again in Phase 5.

Though we may not see T’Challa/Black Panther in Phase 4, we may get to meet Namor before his appearance in Black Panther 2.

“How?”, you might ask? Well as quickly as it went up, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director, Scott Derrickson, shared a comic panel of Doctor Strange underwater, clutching his throat, with a panicked look on his face and a certain someone swimming up to him in the background. That individual? Namor, the Sub-Mariner.

Wegotthiscovered.com shared this image of the tweet after it was quickly removed from Derrickson’s verified Twitter account.

So we may be introduced to Namor in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before he interacts with T’Challa, which could lead to some amazing storytelling in the MCU and bring more anticipation to Phase 5.

Others are speculating online that Keanu Reeves may be up for the role of Namor, since it was rumored he was previously approached by Marvel Studios, in what was thought to be a role in Marvel’s Eternals.

After SDCC 2019’s cast announcement for Eternals did not include the John Wick actor, many fans immediately turned to the possibility that Reeves would be playing the Prince of Atlantis since they do share some noticeably similar features and qualities.

Since it is far too early to confirm any of this information, be sure to take it with a grain of sea salt until Marvel Studios makes a formal announcement, but it is cause for excitement at the possibilities!

Who would you like to see as Namor? Do you hope to see him in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or in Black Panther 2? Or maybe both?
