The numbers are in for this weekend’s debut of the Avengers: Age of Ultron. Coming in at an impressive 2nd place with the biggest US debut opening of all times, Avengers: Age of Ultron earned $ 187.7 million dollars this weekend. Although it did not beat the all-time record of the original Avengers movie, which debuted in 2012, earning $207.7 million. Disney Studios head of distribution, Dave Hollis said it was a “spectacular result” for the movie and continued saying “having the second biggest opening weekend in history of the movie business is always going to be something you walk away overwhelmingly happy with” Marvel and Disney Studios now have bragging rights with the top three opening weekend slots of all times going to Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3.
The potential to earn the top spot may have been influenced by several events including the Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao boxing event, the NBA playoffs and the Kentucky Derby which were all aired this weekend. Shown in 4, 276 screens, the US debut, audience included audience demographics – 59% male of which 41% were under 25 years of age. With the film’s release in Japan and China soon, “Avengers: Age of Ultron has the potential to the $1 billion mark and beyond.”
