Avatar Re-Release Tops weekend box office with $30 Million

The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar movie will be hitting theaters this year. However, eager movie goers are given a limited-time opportunity to watch the first Avatar in theaters again!

James Cameron’s “Avatar” landed a special theatrical re-release in a new 4K high dynamic range restoration on September 23 to remind audiences of the sprawling epic ahead of its sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” premiering December 16. The 2009 movie was certainly a visually epic experience for theaters when it first came out. In case you never saw the movie or plan to rewatch it, this is a great way to experience the movie in its 4K high dynamic range!

Over the weekend, Avatar added another $30.5 million to its lifetime box office total, with $10 million of that coming from North America and $20.5 million coming from international markets. Avatar is already the highest-grossing film of all time, meaning this is only adding to its record-setting gross.

James Cameron’s first follow-up to his “Avatar,” the highest-grossing film of all time, will open in theaters on December 16. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet. To whet audiences’ appetites, the studio has successfully re-released a 4K version of “Avatar” in theaters.
