Breaking Down the Numbers

After a powerful debut on December 19, 2025—which saw a global opening of $345 million—the threequel has maintained incredible momentum through the holiday stretch.

The film’s domestic pull in North America has reached an estimated $217.7 million, while international markets continue to lead the way with a staggering $542.7 million. This performance currently ranks the film as the number five global release of 2025. Notably, it is on the verge of becoming only the second Hollywood film this year to cross the $100 million milestone in China, trailing only behind Disney’s Zootopia 2.

A Historic $6 Billion Franchise

With the success of Fire and Ash, the Avatar trilogy has officially made history. The combined earnings of the three films have now surpassed $6 billion worldwide, making it the first movie trilogy in cinema history to reach this monumental milestone. For context, the original 2009 Avatar stands at $2.92 billion, followed by 2022’s The Way of Water at $2.32 billion.

While some blockbusters rely on explosive opening weekends only to fizzle out, James Cameron’s films are famous for their “legs.” The original Avatar debuted to a modest $77 million domestically before staying at #1 for seven consecutive weeks. Similarly, the first sequel held the top spot for nearly two months.

Industry analysts expect Fire and Ash to follow this same pattern, with many predicting it will cross the $1 billion mark within the next week. As James Cameron and star Sam Worthington have discussed in recent interviews, the continued success of this film is vital for the future of the planned fourth and fifth installments. Cameron recently admitted that the box office performance of this chapter will essentially decide if the saga continues or if he moves on to other stories.
