Hurricane Lane

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is preparing for any effects from Hurricane Lane as it approaches. The island of Oahu is currently under a hurricane watch and can expect periods of rain, strong winds, and high surf beginning Thursday, August 23rd through Friday, August, 24. Aulani is currently operating under normal conditions.

If you have to ride out a hurricane, a Disney resort is probably the safest place you can be. I experience Hurricane Matthew back in 2016 when I was on vacation at Disney World. The Disney Cast Members are very helpful and accommodating during these times. Some of the resorts (the deluxe resorts where the resort room doors are on the inside) often have activities going on to entertain Guests. Other resorts, such as Coronado Springs where we were staying, has a curfew for Guests to abide by for safety reasons. But before the hurricane hits, the make sure Guests have their chance to load up on food, drinks, supplies, and activities for little ones while you ride it out. It was a really great experience to be here during a hurricane, and the parks only closed for 2 days.

Walt Disney World does have a Hurricane Policy. If the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area officially issues a Hurricane Warning within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, guests who call in advance are able to reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney World Travel Company vacation package.

There is an actual hurricane season – Florida’s Hurricane Season technically starts around the 1st of June and runs until the 3oth of November. Hurricanes can happen at any time, however, peak season (when there’s the greatest likelihood of a storm) is typically between the middle of August through the end of October.

Disney has only closed down a handful of times for hurricanes. If you find yourself traveling during these dates, don’t get in a panic. Walt Disney World’s location in Central Florida means that it is unlikely to feel the full brunt of a storm. Though Disney has closed a few times in the past due to Hurricanes, most notably Hurricane Matthew last October, Hurricane Jeanne and Frances in 2004 and Floyd in 1999, full park closures are pretty few and far between. Now that’s not to say that the weather can’t get downright nasty, but it probably won’t result in lengthy disruptions or massive cancellations.
