The Aristocats : Classic Storybook App for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

The Aristocats : Classic Storybook App for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

I had a chance to try out The Aristocats: Classic Storybook App for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and I really liked it and wanted to share the app with you.

The app, which is $3.99 in the iTunes store, allows the owner to use their Apple device to “read” the storybook. You will find interactive games such as puzzles, piano lessons, and pictures to “paint” online, embedded in the story as you progress through the pages.

When you first log on you will be asked to “personalize” your book by inserting your picture and a name. This really doesn’t serve any purpose than just looking cool from what I can tell however. Let me tell you a bit more about the app.

The Storybook: Like the Jungle Book Classic Storybook  App I wrote about previously, the art is absolutely beautiful in the app. The woman’s voice that reads along with each highlighted word was beautiful with a hint of a British accent but nothing overwhelming. It “fit” the story of Aristocats well and having the words highlighted can help early readers with their training. The art looks as if it could be actual drawings scanned from the original movie. At times, the picture is still and at times the character will dance or their eyes will move. So it both feels like a book and a movie of sorts.

Games: There seemed to be fewer games in this app than in the Jungle Book App, but my children adored the piano. If you’ve ever watched The Aristocats you’ll remember the “Scales and Arpeggios” song. In one game you can play a small piano on your own OR the colorful paw prints will teach you how to play the song. Very fun and my 10 and 5 year old really liked the game.

There are also puzzles you can put together and something different than the Jungle Book App, when you color a picture you have the option of emailing it to someone. Which I thought was really neat.

Another neat thing I found on this app was the ability to record your own voice. I was thinking it would be particularly nice if a parent was traveling to have them “read” the book, record it, and then have it readily available at bedtime. It also allows the reader to have the words light up without a voice reading.

Overall I like the App. I think kids who are real Aristocat lovers will enjoy it and it kept my kids busy on a long vacation ride back. Give it a try!
