“Anastasia” removed from Disney+

We’re still in the early days of March and fans are noticing the absence of a popular 90s movie on Disney+. The 20th Century Studios Anastasia movie has been removed from the Disney+ streaming library.

The reason for the removal has nothing to do with the current crisis involving Ukraine and Russia. Instead, it has do with an exclusive contract pertaining to streaming privileges. The animated feature Anastasia will be available on Starz from March 18th.

It’s unknown how long the film will be unavailable on Disney+ in the United States. But rest assured, once the animated Anastasia movie has completed its contract with Starz, it will return to Disney+.

Disney+ doesn’t inform subscribers in advance of any removals. So, we understand the removal may have confused quite a number of subscribers. We’ve seen this happen a few times due to contracts involving streaming privileges, but again, the film will be back on Disney+ eventually.

To help provide a brief description of the animated movie:

The evil warlock Rasputin puts a hex on the royal Romanovs and young Anastasia disappears when their palace is overrun. Years later, the Dowager Empress offers a reward for Anastasia’s return. Two scheming Russians, planning to pawn off a phony, hold auditions and choose an orphan girl with a remarkable resemblance to the missing princess. They bring her to Paris for the reward, not knowing she’s the real Anastasia.

The 1997 animated feature film, Anastasia, starred Meg Ryan (Anastasia/Anya), John Cusack (Dimitri), Angela Lansbury (Dowager Empress Marie), Kelsey Grammar (Vladimir), Christopher Lloyd (Rasputin), Hank Azaria (Bartok) and Bernadette Peters (Sophie).
