A judge has rejected Amber Heard’s request for the defamation case involving her and Johnny Depp to be declared a mistrial.
Amber Heard asked the court to nullify the verdict and order a new trial, after discovering that one of the seven jurors did not receive a summons. Heard’s team stated that the jury summons was sent to a person from the same household who is 25 years older than the juror who came to court.

“There is no evidence of fraud or wrongdoing,” Judge Penney Azcarate stated in the court order. Representatives for Heard have not responded to a request for comment.
Heard still has the ability to appeal the verdict to the Virginia Court of Appeals. The issues presented to the appellate court could well be different from the issues Azcarate rejected.
The defamation case wrapped up last month, with the jury ruling that Heard defamed her ex-husband when she wrote a Washington Post op-ed in 2018.
The jury awarded $10.35 million to Johnny Depp in accordance with state law. Amber Heard received $2 million in compensatory damages and no punitive damages for her countersuit.
