The nation’s top female youth basketball players and teams are vying for a title as the Amateur Athletic Union’s Girls Basketball National Championships are underway at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.
Competition began July 3 with the Division I, II and III 8th Grade National Championships and continues through July 15 with championships for grades 9,10, 11 and 12. The 8th, 10th and 11th grade girls super showcases will be held from July 8-10, and the 9th Grade Girls Super Showcase will be held from July 11-13. The girls 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade championships will take place July 30 through Aug. 4.
This year’s competition features teams such as the Lady Jets (Dallas, Tex.), coached by 2009 NBA Sixth Man of the Year and Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry.
Notable AAU Girls Basketball alumni include players such as WNBA greats Lisa Leslie and Diana Taurasi and the 2012 NCAA Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, Brittney Griner.
