Kevin Feige Says ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Doctor Strange’ Will Be Part of Phase 3 of the MCU

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is no stranger to the media. In fact, the man seems to love talking and gushing about the projects that his studio is currently producing. For fans like myself, it’s great, because he always seems to say things that get me more excited about what’s coming down the pipe from Marvel Studios. Recently, in an interview with MTV, Feige was giving updates on everything from ‘Iron Man 3’ to ‘The Avengers 2’, but managed to sneak in some juicy bits of information concerning Marvel’s ever growing Cinematic Universe after the end of ‘The Avengers 2’, closing the door on their Phase 2, and making their way into Phase 3.

Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ has already been confirmed for a November 6, 2015 release date, coming out after the studio’s big gun, ‘The Avengers 2’. While we knew that it was on its way, we didn’t know exactly how, or when, the film would fall into the MCU. Feige had this to say:

“‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three. Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie…I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004.  He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

After that, he went on and hinted at other characters we may see in Marvel’s Phase Three, but also confirmed Doctor Strange would be happening:

“Beyond that… ‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop…’Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them.  He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”

But don’t forget, Phase 3 is still a ways off, so we’re going to have to enjoy Phase 2 first. Feige made sure to drop a few hints about two of those upcoming films, ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘The Avengers 2’.  First he had this to say about ‘Iron Man 3’:

“I would say that the exercise of this film [Iron Man 3] is very much standalone, more so than any ‘Iron Man’ film since the first one. But because we are in Phase Two and we’re heading towards another ‘Avengers’ movie, there’s certainly a road that’s being paved — you just might not notice it…While you’re driving on the road, not knowing where it’s going, you might not realize that there are road signs and signals and lane changes that we’re setting up now — they might not be readily apparent the first time you see the movie…In this one, it has less to do with any sort of larger S.H.I.E.L.D. or cosmic overlay, but much more about Tony, his frame of mind, his viewpoint and the things he wants to pursue.”

Which then lead to this brief update on ‘The Avengers 2’, which is so exciting and mouth watering, that I already wish it was May 2015:

“It’s still early days, but I told [Whedon] after reading the first sketch outline he delivered — and there’s a lot of work still to do, he has to sit down and turn this into a movie — but there are already seven things in there that are worth the price of admission alone.”

Everything Feige says gets me more and more excited for the future of Marvel Studios. Their output has been absolutely rock solid since 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, and they don’t look like they’re ready to stop just yet. Feige is a smart guy, and I love seeing that he’s planned so far ahead already for the future of the series. I’m also glad to see them introducing new characters and sides of the Marvel Universe that we haven’t seen yet on film. While Phase 2 is mostly sequels to many of the films we already know, with the exception being ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, it appears that Phase 3 will be introducing quite a few new characters, something that will be exciting for new fans, and older fans alike.
