Director Zack Snyder Developing a Standalone ‘Star Wars’ Film

It looks like the ‘Star Wars’ train is full steam ahead right now. While we’ve heard about the possible new TV series on ABC, and we know that LucasFilm is planning a new trilogy set after ‘Return of the Jedi’, but now it looks like they’re taking a page out of the Marvel book and developing films that are set outside of the new trilogy.

It looks like Zack Snyder, who is currently working with DC on his new Superman film, ‘Man of Steel’, has quietly developing the film over at LucasFilm for some time now, and the film is said to be inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s classic film ‘Seven Samurai’, and will follow a group of Jedi on a new mission.

Vulture was the first to break the news. It appears that Snyder’s new film will be a standalone picture in the universe, which goes back to what Bob Iger said back in October when Disney first bought the company, saying that the proposed idea was to release a new ‘Star Wars’ film every two to three years. I love the idea of exploring the ‘Star Wars’ universe in stand alone films that aren’t part of the numbered episodes, but having them still connect to them. This strikes me as a very Marvel like approach to the universe, which is a great thing. Marvel Studios seems to have blown the franchise doors wide open with their unusual method of doing separate movies franchises that all take place in one expanding universe, and bringing them together in one movie. This could work really well for the ‘Star Wars’ universe, and now it definitely has me very intrigued, especially to see how it fits into the bigger picture.

It sounds like Snyder will begin full work on the film when the ball starts rolling on ‘Star Wars Episode VII’, so until then we’ll be in the dark on all the details of the movie. But with a 2015 release date already set for ‘Episode VII’, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll hear something sooner rather than later. As for Snyder’s involvement, it’s very interesting to me. Snyder is a visually stunning director, so having him bring that to the ‘Star Wars’ universe is very exciting, so I really hope this turns out well. He’s a director who I still think is trying to find his footing, so this may be a good chance to really shine. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how this film develops. The fact that he is using Akira Kurosawa as an influence is great though, because that is who Lucas was heavily influenced by as well, so much so that much of ‘A New Hope’ is very similar to Kurosawa’s film ‘The Hidden Fortress’. Bringing more of Kurosawa’s influence to the ‘Star Wars’ universe is a great idea, and to me shows that Snyder knows the right way to go within the confines of the series, grabbing from things that already influenced the series and made it popular to begin with.

We’ll hopefully know more about the project soon, so keep your eye on Chip and Company, because we’ll post more as we learn it. Are you excited for this new, standalone ‘Star Wars’ film? Let me know in the comments below!
