When the news that Netflix and the Disney. had entered into a new multi-year agreement that will start in 2016 hit the airwaves on Tuesday, everyone was happy and Netflix Inc. shares event went up more than 8%.
Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription TV service for first-run live-action and animated feature films for the Walt Disney Co.’s Studios. Starting in 2016, Netflix members will be able to watch movies from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Disneynature as soon as they are made available for pay TV.
Currently, Starz has had the agreement in place and although the financial terms of the multi-year deal with Netflix were not disclosed, it has been rumored that Starz had paid around $100 million for their current deal. Some analysts are saying that Netflix will be paying upwards of $200 million for their agreement.
Netflix’s family offerings will have a big boost from this deal – especially for their children’s section which is where contest for kids under 12 is stored. “Netflix Kids” and “Just for Kids” has been focused on characters like Dora the Explorer and Curious George, so they need to get ready because the best kids fun is on its way!
The deal also includes titles from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios and Disneynature.
Netflix subscribers are also going to get the direct-to-video releases, which starts in 2013. The contest will be available for instant viewing on many platforms, such as tablets, mobile phones and the good old-fashioned TV!
For Netflix subscribers this sounds almost too good to be true! I may have to sign up for this service! Tell me do you think Starz should have kept the Disney deal or are you excited for Netflix to step in?
