I was looking forward to reviewing “Disney’s American Presidents” app based off the press release (it really sold me). Even though the target age was for grades 3-8, I like history and politics, and some of the “teasers” such as “Do you know which president got stuck in a White House bathtub?” really made me buy in to the “Disney’s American Presidents” app.
The main hub of the app is the “Unofficial Oval Office Scrapbook” which has every president from George Washington to Barack Obama included, and they each have their own two pages. When you start the scrapbook with George Washington, it has a video with some political and historical commentary and then 5 or 6 interactive icons. The one I will never forget is an animated picture of George Washington with dark black sunglasses walking the catwalk and bobbing his head left to right – this was depicting the info that Mr. Washington took such an active part in our military he even personally designed the uniforms! So, I was off to a good start…I mean where else can you see prior leaders of our great country all taking a bath together?
The app in entirety was what you hoped and expected from Disney, which is a safe for kids, well done educational tool. I learned a lot, though the info was presented in a very straight forward way, so if you are looking for a game play app this is not it. But, with that, they still did a great job of making the app fun for kids.
The app contains a ton of information – each president down to the few we forget were even presidents – think Millard Fillmore – has just as much info as George Washington. Some of the info is silly and fun, but some is very important, such as how John Adams avoided getting in between the France and England war and how he managed to do that, and how the Democratic and Republican parties came about and why it was needed.
My favorite part of the app was the interviews and commentary from such legends and Washington Insiders as Bob Woodward, Sam Donaldson, Paul Begala and many more. I am not sure if the target demographic will know who these people are and their favorite part is going to be the icons and sound bites, but having kids learn our history has to be a huge priority.
The only complaint was on the technical side and that was turning the pages on the scrapbook was not clear and even after figuring it out was a bit difficult to do. I swiped 5 times on some pages to get it to turn.
The app cost $3.99 and did take quite awhile to download so be prepared as all the info and videos make quite a large app. I believe it was well worth the money and if you have kids interested (or need to be!) in the election or history then this is a great app for your family! Take a look and let me know your thoughts?
