Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3 "Unleashed" in Stores on September 18th!

Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3 “Viva La Fiesta” hits stores on September 18, 2012.  Thanks to Chip and Disney Studios I got a sneak peek at this Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy film.  Just like Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 this film is only released for home viewing.  My 5 year old and I recently watched the first two Beverly Hills Chihuahua movies and were anticipating the new adventures of Papi, Chloe and their puppies.  We were curious what their two-legged family was up to as well.  So we sat down with our own four-legged family member and watched the movie!

Leaving the Nest (or Doggy Bed)

The film begins with everyone looking to spread their wings (or arms and paws in this case).   Sam and Rachel move out of Aunt Viv’s and take jobs in a posh, doggy boutique resort.  Chloe is ready for her pups to attend Doggy Day School, who up to now have been homeschooled by Papi (Voice of George Lopez).  Papi is along for the ride with his “Corazon” Chloe and to protect his precious pups.  As in Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, Papi is doing his best to instill a sense of Latin American pride in his pups.  The push and pull of the traditional, blue-collar Papi and the Beverly Hills Chloe transcends into this film for some humorous scenes.

It’s a Dog Eat Dog World

The Langham hires Sam as a Landscaper and Rachel as a Sous Chef at a critical time.  Review Writer Amelia James (Frances Fisher-Titanic, Torchwood) and her pooch Charlotte (voice of Lacey Chabert-Mean Girls, Party of Five) are there for a stay  in the Presidential Suite.  The Langham is also mysteriously losing clients to the nearby competition.

Taking Pride in What You Do Different

The premise of the story surrounds Papi and Chloes’s youngest, Rosa.  As the “runt” of the litter, Rosa feels left out in her new world at the Langham.  She struggles to find her place and with her fathers encouragement they decide a “Doggy Quinceanera” is in order.    A Quinceanera is a Latin American celebration of a fifteen year old girls transition to womanhood and independence.

Partying like a Pup

Planning of the party introduces us to a new four-legged friend, Sebastian (voice of Tom Kenney-Sponge Bob Square Pants).  The resident Party Planning Pooch provides a ton of hilarious quips as he and Papi make all the decisions for Rosa’s big day.  One of the “laugh out loud” moments for my son and I was the Doggy Band Auditions.

Special Features

Here’s where I found the Blu-Ray set lacking.  I would have loved to see some behind the scenes clips with the dogs and their trainers.  This movie begged to have a blooper reel.  Here is what the set did have:

  • “Hanging with Papi”-a 5 minute featurette with all the actors commenting on working with Papi.  From his good acting qualities, working with wardrobe and what a diva Chloe is.
  • “Living Your Dreams” Music Video-Disney Channels Raini Rodriguez (“Austin and Ally”) performs her song in both Spanish and English versions.  It features Raini and her friends setting up for a Quinceanera with clips of the movie slipped in.
  • Don’t turn off your movie while the closing credits are still rolling.  You will miss a few extra scenes and a message from Papi on responsible pet adoption.

A Dog Owners Thoughts

I really liked this movie and thought it was the best of the trilogy for the entire  family.  As a parent I could relate to watching your child find their own place in the world.  My son just enjoyed the silly dog antics.  It wouldn’t be a Chihuahua movie if the Cortez family did not find themselves in some sort of mystery.  Unlike the previous two movies, it was not as dark and potentially scary.  Like most Disney movies there are underlying jokes for the adults while keeping the kids laughing.   There is certainly an important message in the film about family, friends and teamwork.  My Boston Terrier “mix” (your guess is as good as mine), watched the entire film and barked at her favorite parts.  Usually involving dogs and people chasing each other.

We give this movie a 4 Paw out of 5 rating! (Note:  My pooch only gave it two paws because she’s not allowed to jump on the furniture)
