It isn’t very often we get a good action show on television. But this year, ABC treated us with their action/adventure series ‘Missing’, starring Ashley Judd, Cliff Curtis, and Sean Bean. The show follows Rebecca “Becca” Winstone (Judd), who plays a retired CIA agent and widow, who has an 18 year old son named Michael. When Michael is accepted into a summer program in Rome, Becca doesn’t hear from him for a week, and being an ex CIA agent she gets worried something is wrong. Bent on finding her son, Becca leaves for Rome and gets caught up in an international conspiracy with links to her old life. Now Disney has given us the chance to revisit the series’ ten episodes over and over again here in this ‘Complete First Season’ DVD set.
I really had a lot of fun with ‘Missing’. I was excited to see Ashley Judd, someone I’ve been a fan of for some time, headline her own show. Not to mention it was a show where she was going to get a chance to be an action star. Judd really shines as Becca, really bring the role to life. You can feel the pain and desperation she feels with her son missing, and I really believed she would go to the ends of the earth to save him. She actually turned out to be a pretty good TV action star, and she has some great action scenes throughout the series. But Judd isn’t the only one person in the show who gets a chance to shine. I was very impressed with Cliff Curtis, a character actor I’ve been watching for years now, who plays CIA Agent Dax Miller, who is hot on Becca’s trail. He’s just fantastic as Dax, and I would love to see him continue getting roles like this to really stand out in. My only minor gripe with the series is that it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the series wasn’t picked up so it’s a bit frustrating that the loose ends won’t be resolved. But it doesn’t detract from the rest of the series, so it’s something I can easily overlook.
Disney has given ‘Missing’ a few solid special features to really make this series set worth it. We have ‘Missing: In Action’ which is a look at the series with series star Ashley Judd, executive producer and creator Gregory Poirier, and executive producer Gina Matthews who take you through what it was like to create this world and really make a compelling show with great characters and drama while being a an action show. Then there is ‘On Location: Inside Istanbul’ which is a look at the show as it filmed on location there. And finally we have a set of deleted scenes that lets you delve a bit deeper in to ‘Missing’. None of the scenes were particularly stand out worthy for me, and I could see why they were left out, but it’s definitely fun to sit down and watch them none the less. The show has come to DVD in a widescreen aspect ratio with a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio mix. The show has a great transfer, and the audio mix is definitely clean and clear, and it really boosts the action scenes.
‘Missing’ is one of the best action shows that’s been on TV in recent memory. It was really fun to revisit this series, and the DVD set is great. Boasting a great widescreen encode, a stellar 5.1 surround sound mix, and a few great special features, it’s hard not to recommend it. The series features a strong leading performance from Ashley Judd and has a great supporting cast. This is just a great series, and I hope many of you feel the same way when you pick up the DVD. ‘Missing’ comes highly recommended.
