Disney World has some of its highest temperatures during the summer months. Many of us find that when we get to the parks, we were not quite prepared for how HOT it is as we walk from attraction to attraction or while standing in line. Through the years, I have tried many things to help keep my family and I more comfortable during the heat of the day.
Here are a few of my tips and tricks to staying cool at Walt Disney World
1. Check out the list of attractions for one during the hottest part of the day that is long AND heavily air conditioned. Some suggested attractions: a) Magic Kingdom – The Hall of Presidents or Philharmagic b) EPCOT – Spaceship Earth or Ellen’s Energy Adventure c) Hollywood Studios – The Great Movie Ride or Voyage of the Little Mermaid d) Animal Kingdom – It’s Tough to Be a Bug or Finding Nemo – The Musical. These shows are each over a half hour long, which should allow you enough time to cool off!
2. Head straight to the ice cream shop. Even if you do not cool off from eating that ice cream cone, you got a great tasting treat! In addition to the ice cream shops, there are strategically placed ice cream carts located all over all of the theme parks! The carts include prepackaged ice cream cones and the ever-famous Mickey ear ice cream bars! Go ahead and grab one!
3. Eat smaller meals rather than larger meals. When you digest food, the process typically causes the body to elevate its temperatures. Smaller meals will help to reduce this problem.
4. Head back to your resort for a swim. You can later return to the parks refreshed and ready for one of the park’s nighttime shows!
5. If you have a refrigerator, freeze a bottle of water the night before and carry it to the parks with you. As the ice melts, you will have a handy, cool drink!
6. Head to the restroom and wet your arms and face. While in there, wet a cloth or paper towel to carry with you. This will cool you off, if only for a bit!
7. Wear a hat! This will get that blistering sun out of your eyes and reduce your temperature! (It goes nearly without saying but be sure you wear sunscreen! The Florida sun will quickly burn you even in the winter months!)
8. If visiting EPCOT or Downtown Disney, your children will appreciate the water play areas! If playing in these fountains is not your style, look for the misting stations and misting fans throughout the parks!
9. Grab a cup of free ice water from most counter service restaurants.
10 Wear lighter colors – We all remember this from science class. Dark clothes absorb the heat and make you hotter, while lighter colors reflect the sunlight. Save clothes with darker colors for night time.
These are my favorite ways to stay cool when it is oh-so-hot! What do you do to keep yourself and your family cool when visiting the parks on hot days?

We have annual passes so the family takes our time at the theme parks. We definitely cool off at the resort pool. Later that afternoon we hit the parks and enjoy the extra magic hours. We only do this when it is hot. Normally we avoid the very hot months. But we will be there in the next week or so for my daughters birthday. We are also planning on resort hopping too.
