ABC Family buys TV rights to "Alice in Wonderland"

Does Disney have to buy the rights to itself?

Along with a monster box office haul in its opening weekend, Walt Disney Pictures’ “Alice in Wonderland” has bagged a TV deal.

Sibling cable network ABC Family has acquired the rights to Tim Burton’s 3D fantasy in a deal that will kick off in 2012.

It also bought the rights to “The Blind Side,” for which Sandra Bullock won an Oscar on Sunday. The drama will also premiere in 2012.

“Alice” earned $116.1 million during its first three days of release across North America, according to final data issued Monday, setting a new record for a film opening in the traditionally slow first quarter.

The cable network has not decided whether it would telecast the movie in 3D or 2D. Financials were not disclosed, but an opening of that caliber normally fetches about $24 million. ABC Family’s small slate of acquired features also includes the “Harry Potter” franchise.
