Before the official release of John Carter, Disney is already hoping to turn the film into a trilogy. Director Andrew Stanton has made no secret of his desire for two more films. According to Screen Rant, Stanton and his co-writer Michael Chabon have not only written outlines for the next two films but they are in the beginning stages of writing the script. The second film is tentatively titled John Carter: The Gods of Mars.
But is all of this planning premature? According to Deadline the answer might be yes. Early tracking for John Carter has not been positive. On the other hand early word of mouth from people who have actually seen the film has been positive. Disney’s marketing for the film hasn’t really picked up yet so there is a slight possibility that more people could become interested in the film before its release in two weeks.
I will be at Disney’s Hollywood Studios March 3rd for a special preview of John Carter and I will share my thoughts on the film here on Chip and Company. If you would like to know more of Andrew Stanton’s thoughts on this film and the possible sequels there is a great interview with him at Ain’t It Cool News.
John Carter will be released in theaters on March 9, 2012.
