Oaxacan Wood Carving Shop Set to Close
Visitors stepping into the twilight glow of EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion will soon notice a missing piece of its cultural heart. The longtime Oaxacan wood carving shop located inside the Plaza de los Amigos marketplace is set to close permanently.
A Disney Cast Member confirmed that the location’s final day of operation will be Monday, August 31.

Authentic Craftsmanship in the Heart of the Pyramid
For years, the wood-carving tables near the entrance and exit of the pavilion’s central bazaar offered guests a rare look at traditional Mexican folk art. The vibrant figures, often depicting real and mythical creatures (popularly known as alebrijes), are individually hand-carved using pocketknives and machetes from wood harvested in the Oaxacan Valley of southern Mexico. After meticulous hand-sanding, local artisans paint each piece with intricate, eye-popping patterns.
Unlike mass-produced theme park souvenirs, no two figures in the shop are identical, making the location a favorite stop for collectors seeking authentic handiwork.

Liquidation Sale Underway
In anticipation of next week’s closure, the shop is clearing out its remaining stock. Signs displayed across the display tables announce that all remaining Oaxacan wood carvings are 50% off their marked price. For guests visiting EPCOT before the end of the month, it offers a rare opportunity to take home a piece of World Showcase craftsmanship at a significant discount.
What Comes Next for Plaza de los Amigos?
Disney has not yet announced plans for what will take over the space. Because the carving setup occupies a relatively small footprint near the heavily trafficked entrance to La Cava del Tequila and the pavilion’s main pathways, Disney may opt to temporarily leave the area clear to ease guest flow through the crowded indoor marketplace. The surrounding retail stalls, Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros, and dining locations inside the pyramid remain unaffected.
While the departure of third-party artisans and independent vendors is a natural part of World Showcase’s evolving roster, losing hand-crafted art created by traditional technique marks a bittersweet shift for World Showcase purists.
