Dwayne Johnson Confirms Disney’s Plans for Moana 3
The ocean is calling once again! Disney is diving right back into its hit animated franchise with Moana 3 officially in the pipeline. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who brings the larger-than-life demigod Maui to life, dropped the major teaser during the press tour for the upcoming live-action Moana film, which sails into theaters on July 10.

“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes,” Johnson shared during a Moana press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “But first, the live-action Moana—we’ll let that come out first. We have the amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers… they will pen Moana 3.”
The expansion of the franchise makes perfect sense given its astronomical success. While the original 2016 film brought in a stellar $680 million worldwide, its popularity exploded on Disney+, routinely dominating the streaming charts. In fact, Moana 2 was initially planned as a Disney+ streaming series before being retooled for the big screen. That pivot paid off massively for the studio: after a record-breaking $225 million Thanksgiving opening in 2024, the sequel sailed past the billion-dollar mark, ultimately pulling in a staggering $1.059 billion globally.

Both Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho are expected to return to the recording booth to voice the legendary demigod Maui and the courageous Polynesian heroine. The franchise first captured hearts by following the strong-willed daughter of a village chief chosen by the ocean to save her island, while the second film saw the daring wayfinder journey into deep, uncharted waters to break an ancient curse. While official plot details for the third chapter are still under wraps, the adventure is sure to be epic.
As for the soundtrack, the musical direction remains an open question. Original maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda—the mastermind behind iconic hits like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome”—passed the songwriting torch for the sequel to the Grammy-winning duo Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical). Disney has yet to announce who will be tuning up to pen the songs for Moana 3.
As Johnson noted, audiences will get to visit the shores of Motunui in real life before Moana 3 arrives. Disney’s highly anticipated live-action reimagining of the original animated hit is up next, starring Johnson alongside newcomer Catherine Laga’aia in the title role. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Thomas Kail, with a script penned by the franchise’s go-to writing duo, Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller.
