Episodes & Reels is delivering our monthly Top 10 List a little differently this time around. We will post one entry in the countdown each night from Jan 23 – Feb 3 on Chip and Co until we finally reveal #1! Now, here’s our #8 animated Disney film of all-time:
#8 – THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989)
Stars: Jodi Benson, Samuel E. Wright
Directors: Ron Clements, John Musker
Rating: G
There was a period of time in the late 1980s, perhaps early 1990s, that Disney Animation turned the corner. They went from brush-stroked, classical impressionistic cartoons that we see in a lot of the classics (oldies) on this top ten to a much more pristine and refined form of moving artful cartoons. The images were crisper, the characters more believable (and sometimes voiced by A-list celebrities), and the stories more profound. The period of 1989 until about 1995 with the release of the first Disney/Pixar film (Toy Story) is the exact timeframe that I am speaking of, and it all really started with The Little Mermaid. Movies such as Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast would all follow suit in this new Disney era, but they all owe a little bit of gratitude to the red-headed Ariel and her friendly array of singing sea creatures. As far as Princess movies go, Little Mermaid is probably the most unique as it plays to the Pinocchio plot-line except that this is a half-fish/half-Princess who just wants to be a “real girl” as opposed to a puppet who, well you get it. Little Mermaid is a movie that every little girl will love and remember forever as they dream of being a Princess. It is also great cinema for us parents because we can see when the new Disney frontier of animation really picked up steam with this release.

Love this movie! It’s the first movie I remember owning. I played it over and over again when I was about 10!
