Alice in Wonderland Gets a Stunning 4K Restoration for its 75th Anniversary

Prepare to step through the looking glass into a world more vibrant than ever before. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, Disney’s animated masterpiece Alice in Wonderland is returning with a meticulous 4K restoration, arriving on Digital and 4K Ultra HD™ Blu-ray on May 5.

For those who can’t wait to see the results, the newly restored film will make its grand debut with a special one-night-only premiere at the TCM Classic Film Festival on May 1, giving fans an early glimpse at the remastered magic.

A Nine-Month Labor of Love

This wasn’t just a simple update. The Walt Disney Film Restoration team spent nine months breathing new life into the 1951 classic. Using the original nitrate Successive Exposure (SE) negatives, artists performed a high-resolution digital scan followed by extensive “clean-up” to eliminate decades of dust, warping, and age-related wear.

To ensure the film stayed true to Walt’s original vision, the team collaborated with Michael Giaimo, a veteran of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Together, they cross-referenced production artwork from the Animation Research Library to refine every shot’s color and luminance.

“The original animation artists’ work on Alice in Wonderland is stunning, and we’re proud to present it with renewed clarity and vibrancy,” says Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management.
