The pavilion’s newest stars have officially arrived: Leafy Seadragons (Phycodurus eques). These extraordinary fish, native to the southern and western coasts of Australia, are close relatives of seahorses and pipefish. With their elaborate, leaf-like appendages, they are masters of underwater camouflage!

The Leafy Seadragon truly lives up to its name, sporting a long, slender body that looks remarkably like a mythical wyrm dragon. While it’s covered in intricate, leaf-shaped protrusions, these aren’t actually fins or limbs used for swimming—their sole purpose is to provide the perfect natural camouflage against swaying kelp and seagrass.
