Brie Larson Joins The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as Rosalina, Benny Safdie To Voice Bowser Jr.

The Star Festival just delivered a major payload of news. At this morning’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie Nintendo Direct, we finally learned who’s lending their voices to two of the film’s biggest newcomers. Rosalina will be portrayed by Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr. will burst onto the screen voiced by Benny Safdie.

If you felt a Mario Party-level hype spike… same.

The Direct kicked off with the very first full trailer, and it’s packed tighter than a Toad storage closet. We open on Bowser, now pint-sized after his Mini Mushroom mishap from the first movie, living in a tiny model castle inside Princess Peach’s Castle. Apparently being pocket-sized hasn’t dampened his romantic delusions, because yup, he’s still painting portraits of Peach like he’s auditioning for his own renaissance.

Then it’s chaos in the cosmos. A massive star shower lights up the skies over Peach’s Castle, sending Peach and Toad soaring through the air with star-powered flight. Fans got quick glimpses of multiple planets, including a watery world and what looks suspiciously like the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario Odyssey. That could mean our heroes will hop between games the way Mario hops between pipes.

But the big scene-stealer is Bowser Jr., fully armed with his Super Mario Sunshine paintbrush and a mission to save dear ol’ dad. Meanwhile, Rosalina appears only briefly, gracefully taking on a giant mech with her celestial powers. Her appearance was short, but wow did it send theorists into orbit. Could this movie finally address the long-running fan theory linking Peach and Rosalina’s origins? Nintendo sure isn’t saying.

Illumination revealed they are mere “weeks away” from finishing animation on the film, ahead of its April 3, 2026 US release date and April 24 premiere in Japan. They’re also teasing some deep-cut Nintendo characters we haven’t seen yet, so expect at least a few jaw-droppers when the next trailer arrives.

Along with Larson and Safdie, the returning cast brings the Mushroom Kingdom back together: Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Sorry, Yoshi fans… the green king didn’t show up this time. But hey, absence makes the Dino-heart grow fonder.
