Disney Lorcana Artist Denies Viral AI Artwork Accusations

The Disney Lorcana community has been buzzing after artist James C. Mulligan became the subject of viral accusations claiming he used AI-generated elements in his trading card artwork. Mulligan, who has worked with Disney for decades, is pushing back firmly against the claims.

Mulligan has created official art for three Disney Lorcana cards: Flounder – Collector’s Companion and Transformer Chef – Castle Stove from the Ursula’s Return set, and White Rabbit – Royal Herald from Shimmering Skies. The controversy began when a social media user attending Anime NYC alleged that Mulligan lied about not using AI in his work and then sold expensive prints under false pretenses. Their post has since gained millions of views, sparking heated debate online.

The accuser pointed to Mulligan’s reluctance to provide a Procreate timelapse of his process as proof of wrongdoing. Mulligan later blocked the user on social media, escalating the situation further. At one point, Mulligan’s wife responded, claiming they had shared proof with organizers and their legal team.

Rumors quickly spread that Disney Lorcana and Ravensburger had blacklisted Mulligan, though neither company has issued confirmation. In fact, a Ravensburger employee noted publicly that the game has a strict no-AI policy, and that it’s not uncommon for fans to jump to conclusions about art.

Mulligan has now broken his silence with a lengthy Facebook post. In it, he categorically denies ever using AI for Lorcana or other Disney work. He emphasized his long career as a traditional artist, noting that he’s awaiting permission from Ravensburger to share his layered source files to prove his process.

“I understand completely the hatred for artists using generative AI and passing it along as hand-painted work,” Mulligan wrote. “AI has its uses, but I believe it will be incredibly destructive for society. I did NOT use it, nor have I been contacted by Ravensburger or Disney about this matter.”

The artist also revealed he has faced threats against himself and his family since the controversy went viral. Still, he remains committed to transparency once he is allowed to release his files. For now, he says his decades of work should speak louder than accusations.
