The Fantastic Four First Steps Lifts Off With Heroic $118 Million Debut

Marvel’s first family has finally received a heroic welcome at the box office. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” blasted off with a $118 million domestic debut from 4,125 theaters this weekend, slightly ahead of industry projections and signaling a much-needed victory for Marvel Studios. With an additional $100 million from international markets, the film’s global launch stands at an impressive $218 million.

The strong opening provides a crucial boost for the comic book empire, which has grappled with commercial inconsistency in recent years. While legacy sequels like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” have soared, attempts to launch newer properties have often faltered, such as this May’s “Thunderbolts,” which ended its run as one of the lowest-grossing entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The key question now is whether the film can maintain momentum, unlike other recent Marvel movies like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Captain America: Brave New World,” which saw strong debuts collapse in subsequent weeks. “The Fantastic Four” holds a significant advantage: strong critical and audience reception. The film boasts an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and a promising “A-” CinemaScore from opening night audiences, suggesting positive word-of-mouth could give it long legs at the box office, especially with no major competition on the immediate horizon.

This success also breaks a long-standing curse for the property. Previous attempts to bring the team to the big screen have struggled to resonate. 20th Century Fox’s 2005 and 2007 films were financially successful but critically panned, while a widely derided 2015 reboot fizzled completely. This new installment appears to have finally struck the right chord with both critics and moviegoers.

Directed by Matt Shakman, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is a retro-futuristic adventure starring Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, as they unite to protect the world from a cosmic threat.
