Massive Site Prep Underway for Monsters, Inc. Door Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Something monstrous is taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios—and no, we’re not talking about another scream shortage. New aerial photos courtesy of @bioreconstruct on X give us our clearest look yet at the massive groundwork underway for the upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed “Door Coaster” attraction.

The images, snapped above the Cast Member parking area just behind Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Grand Avenue, reveal a huge transformation in progress. What was once a sea of asphalt and light poles is now a well-defined construction site, with a central footprint of compacted dirt and early utility access now taking form. The size and scope of the cleared space signals one thing loud and clear: Disney is going big with this one.

One of Disney’s Largest Ride Buildings Yet

According to recent data from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s GIS mapping tools, the new attraction’s show building will cover a staggering 103,000 square feet. That makes it one of the largest indoor ride buildings at Walt Disney World, trailing only Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, which clocks in at 197,000 square feet. For context:

  • 🏗️ Monsters Inc. Door Coaster: 103,000 sq ft
  • 🛸 Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: 92,000 sq ft
  • 🦕 DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom: 85,000 sq ft
  • 🎸 Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster: 71,000 sq ft
  • 🌌 Cosmic Rewind: 197,000 sq ft

Yep, it’s going to be that big.

From the Factory Floor to Grand Avenue

This new coaster will anchor a larger Monstropolis expansion, which is set to take over the former MuppetVision 3D* space and the surrounding Grand Park area. While some existing structures (like PizzeRizzo and the Muppet theater) are expected to be reimagined as part of the new land, the coaster’s enormous building is being constructed behind the scenes, pushing the park’s physical boundaries into what was previously backstage space.

And if you’re wondering about sightlines—so is the Disney fanbase. Some guests have noted that the building’s placement, while smart from a space-maximization perspective, will need some clever theming to blend into the immersive lands around it, especially Galaxy’s Edge.

What We Know (So Far)

Disney has yet to announce an official name or opening date for the attraction, but based on the concept art shared earlier this summer, we expect a fast-paced ride through the world of Monsters, Inc., possibly taking guests on a thrilling journey through the factory’s wild and whimsical door transport system.

From Harryhausen’s-inspired eateries to city street-style theming, the new Monstropolis land promises to bring a mix of laughs, screams, and heart—the perfect fit for a park that already plays host to some of Disney’s most ambitious attractions.

Stay Tuned for More

This is a project to keep your eye on (or all your eyes, if you’re a resident of Monstropolis). We’ll keep tracking the construction progress and bring you updates as this scream-worthy new addition roars to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
