ABC Family’s Jane By Design Style Challenge – Task 2

ABC Family's Jane By Design Style Challenge - Task 2

As you guys may have noticed, I have been participating in the Jane By Design Style Challenge put on by ABC Family to help spread the word about their new show premiering January 3rd at 9/8c.  The good news is I have made it to the next round “Barley” – Grays words, not mine!  Each week on Tuesday and Friday we receive a new task!  Here was this past Friday’s Task #2!

“Find the plain white t-shirt in your trunk.  Using items around your house or your office, create a design on the t-shirt inspired by your fashion icon.  Then, put the shirt on your dress form and post a photo of it to your blog, along with an entry that talks about how your design was inspired by your fashion icon.  Ask your readers to tell you about their style icons here and mention the name of your blog. “

Since I am primarily a Disney blogger, I find inspiration in all things Disney from fashion ideas to vacation fun!  One thing I realized when thinking about this challenge is that a lot of Disney female characters wear aprons and I have a lot of vintage aprons laying around!  I think it makes becoming a Princess or a fictional character more obtainable and likeable.  Here is an example:

Besides Disney Princesses I love all things vintage! Part of the challenge was to gather up a few things from your home to use on this project. So I grabbed a vintage apron, buttons, fabric markers, scissors and my sewing machine and went to work!

ABC Family's Jane By Design Style Challenge - Task 2Instead of placing the apron around the waist I decided to move it up on the body giving it an updated look and creating a baby-doll style shirt.  Then I cut some of the bottom of the t shirt, where you cannot see, and used that to create a small pocket on on the shirt.  Picking up from colors and patterns on the apron I embellished the pocket with some buttons to create a flower design and some blues and greens giving the pocket a more defined shape!  Also on the white part of the shirt I sprayed it heavily with glitter, because all princesses need a touch of glitter!  The glitter takes the plain white fabric to a whole new level giving it a slightly grey tone!  I wanted to make sure this new apron baby-doll t -shirt had a modern feel to it so along with the glitter I cut the sleeves and tied them up.  The ripped up and distressed look is very popular right now with celebrities and I have been seeing it more and more in the stores!  It also takes the shape of the plain t- shirt and makes it more feminine in the arms.  I added a touch of tie dye green and blue to the ties to give it a pop of color!  Here are a few more pictures of my new shirt up close!

I had a lot of fun creating this project for Task #2, I actually felt a little bit like Cinderella, who also wears an apron, with all of the cutting and sewing! I even had a little helper like Cinderella did, although mine was human and 4 years old!  I would love for you to help me out as well! Just head over to the Jane By Design facebook wall right now, and tell them that Chip and Co. sent you and where you get your fashion inspiration from! That’s it, pretty easy – so go do it now!
