Rachel Zegler Reveals New Backstory for Snow White’s Name in Live-Action Remake

Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White” is taking a fresh approach to the iconic princess’s origin story, particularly how she earned her famous name.

In a recent interview with Variety, Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, revealed that the film will deviate from the traditional narrative. Instead of her name being solely derived from her physical appearance, the new backstory connects it to her resilience and strength.

Zegler explained, “It fell back to another version of ‘Snow White’ that was told in history, where she survived a snowstorm that occurred when she was a baby. And so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One of the core points in our film for any young woman or young person is remembering how strong you actually are.”

This change reflects Disney’s ongoing efforts to update its classic stories for modern audiences, emphasizing themes of empowerment and inner strength. While the film will still explore Snow White’s romance with her prince, Zegler stressed that the story aims to empower young women by showcasing their ability to achieve their dreams and find love without sacrificing their independence.

The casting of Zegler, who is of Colombian heritage, has also sparked discussions about representation and inclusivity in Disney’s live-action remakes. Zegler addressed the initial online backlash, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and interpretations of classic characters.

With its reimagined origin story and focus on female empowerment, Disney’s live-action “Snow White” promises a fresh and inspiring take on the beloved fairytale. The film is set to premiere in theaters on March 21, 2025.
