Descendants: The Rise of Red Reigns Supreme on Disney+
Despite a five-year hiatus, the Descendants franchise proves it remains to be a fan favorite for Disney. The newest installment, Descendants: The Rise of Red, debuted on Disney+ over the weekend and quickly became one of the streaming service’s most popular original films!

Launched in 2015, the Descendants franchise captured audiences with its unique premise: following the adventures of the children of iconic Disney villains. The first three films, released in 2015, 2017, and 2019, established Descendants as a major live-action property for Disney. After a lengthy break, The Rise of Red picks up the mantle, following a brief animated special, Descendants: The Royal Wedding, in 2021.
The Rise of Red introduces us to Red, daughter of the Queen of Hearts, played by Kylie Cantrall, and Chloe, daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming, brought to life by Malia Baker (with Brandy and Paolo Montalban reprising their roles from the 1990s Cinderella movie). While some of the original Descendants cast isn’t present in this sequel, familiar faces like Melanie Paxson as the Fairy Godmother do make an appearance.
Regardless of the cast shake-up, audiences embraced The Rise of Red, suggesting the Descendants name itself might hold more power than any individual character.
For those who still have access to the Disney Channel (and not Disney+), Descendants: The Rise of Red will premiere there on August 9th. Have you watched the Rise of Red yet?
