Ant-Man 3 Falls Short of the $500 Million Mark at Global Box Office

The initial box office receipts for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania surely had Marvel executives headed to Baskin Robbins for an ice cream party to celebrate. “Quantumania” opened to 106 million in earning in February, making it the highest performing in the Ant-Man franchise. The film would go on to crater in the weeks that followed, and now “Ant-Man 3” is dangerously close to being the one of a select few Marvel films to barely cross the 500 million dollar mark globally.

The film has currently earned $470 million after six weeks of release. For comparison, that total isn’t much higher than Black Widow ($379 million), which premiered in theaters and simultaneously on Disney+. Other contemporary films in the MCU released post-pandemic crushed Ant-Man’s earnings. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955 million) and Thor: Love and Thunder ($760 million) are more in line with Marvel Studios’ expectations for these event films.

Ant-Man is running closer to pandemic-era box office receipts when the films were released in theaters and streaming. At this rate, Ant-Man 3 will fall short of the first two franchise films, where Ant-Man made $519 million, and Ant-Man 2 earned $622 million. Box office receipts support that interest in Ant-Man 3 waned considerably after a successful opening weekend.

Given Quantumania’s production budget and marketing expenditures, Ant-Man 3 would need more than 600 million to break even. Studio executives were likely to give films like Black Widow and Eternals a pass because of the theater-going environment. Still, Ant-Man’s troubles could be signaling very real superhero fatigue. Marvel is not the only studio feeling the pain recently. Shazam: Fury of the Gods from DC Studios withered with $46 million in box office receipts and will likely lose money for its studio.

Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst, spoke to Variety, saying, “For Marvel, there is always such a high bar that anything less than a grand slam box office home run is seen as underwhelming.” Audiences should wait until the summer releases of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to determine if superhero fatigue is at play. Marvel has put out 31 films in 15 years, and is now creating even more content via Disney+.

While every movie cannot break the billion-dollar mark, we would expect that Marvel held high expectations for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, effectively launching phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film introduced audiences to Jonathan Majors’ “Kang the Conqueror” setting the stage for future team-up films.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 will likely align with films like “Doctor Strange” and “Thor.” However, James Gunn has said this is his last film with the Guardians, so Marvel will need newer characters to pick up the slack if the MCU seeks continued dominance.
