No Old Timer Jokes in Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny
The Indiana Jones franchise has spanned four decades, with its fifth and final installment arriving in theaters in June of 2023. Despite Harrison Ford being in his 70’s when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny filmed, don’t expect the story to poke fun at the actor’s age. Ford explained that age jokes were cut from the script to stay true to the character of Indiana Jones and not take the audience out of the film.

Ford told the Hollywood Reporter, “In [Dial of Destiny] there were a lot of old jokes in the script. We took them all out…There is a moment where he observes himself in this situation and says, ‘What the f-ck am I doing in here?’ But I hate what I call ‘talking about the story.’ I want to see circumstances in which the audience gets a chance to experience the story, not to be led through the nose with highlights pointed out to them. I’d rather create behavior that is the joke of age rather than talk about it.”
The film’s director James Mangold compared the actor with the iconic character by saying, “Harrison is not unlike Indy in the sense he’s carrying with him the scars of all the films he’s made — as well as his own private calamities,” “He is literally this embodiment of all those bruises, broken bones and being bounced off walls and being thrown to the floor over so many years.”

When asked how it felt to be putting on the hat, jacket, and whip one more time, Ford responded, “I’m playing this archaeologist … who wears a brown fedora … and a leather jacket regardless of the weather … and carries a whip? OK, I’ll do it! Look, it was bizarre to start with, and it’s bizarre again. But that feeling goes away immediately because it’s grounded in other things.”
Before ‘Dial of Destiny’ we last saw Indy in 2008’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.’ Many assumed that Crystal Skull was the end of Indy’s journey as he married Marion and rode off into the sunset with Mutt taking over the adventures, but ‘Dial of Destiny’ will serve as the final adventure for Indiana Jones.
