A new rumor suggests Disney is focusing its attention once again on the 2D animation style that first made its company a household name.
According to The DisInsider, Disney is currently working on a 2D animation project called Bluebeard, based on Charles Perrault’s 1600s French folktale of the same name. If the rumors are true, Bluebeard will be Disney’s first traditional animation film since The Princess and the Frog. As for Bluebeard’s production crew, Academy Award-winning Frozen director Jennifer Lee may be involved.

A few months ago, Eric Goldberg, a Disney animation veteran, spoke about the future of the studio and the magic of 2D animation. He was promoting the Sketchbook documentary series and attributed the success of Disney+ for inspiring the company to reevaluate animation styles of the past. While the company is still shifting its attention to the streaming platform, hand-drawn animation is expected to play a bigger role in the process. According to Goldberg, this could include feature-length films to series!
