‘The Goldbergs’ is killing off Jeff Garlin’s character

ABC’s The Goldbergs returns for Season 10 in a few weeks, but will start the new season by making a huge shakeup to the family. For starters, Jeff Garlin’s character has been killed off to explain his absence in the series. Murray Goldberg will have been dead for several months when the new season’s plotlines begin.

The 60-year-old actor and comedian left the ABC family sitcom in December 2021 following allegations of misconduct on the show’s set.

In an interview with EW, showrunner Alex Barnow explains the family’s new sutuation:

“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,”he said. “We’re starting with optimism about [Erica’s] baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.”

After Garlin’s exit from the series, Sony Pictures Television has said to have used a stand-in for Murray’s final scenes and will feature a superimposed version of Garlin’s face on the stand-in for the final appearances. “It feels a little surreal that he will never be here again but the mood on the set is ecstatic,” shared an anonymous cast or crew member. “In fact, several people cheered when the execs said that Jeff would not be returning.”

In the meantime, the cast is planning on showing viewers new exciting story arcs.

Newlyweds Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and Geoff (Sam Lerner) will welcome their first child, making Murray’s widow, the famously overbearing family matriarch Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey), a grandmother.

Viewers can also expect to see more of recurring character Pop-Pop (Judd Hirsch) as well as a new guest star: former “Baywatch” and “Knight Rider” star David Hasselhoff, who will play himself.

The Goldbergs return for Season 10 on September 21.
