Spoiler-Free Review of Disney+’s NEW Film ‘Hollywood Stargirl’

Spoiler-Free Review of Disney+'s NEW Film 'Hollywood Stargirl'

This week on, June 3rd, 2022 Disney+ will be streaming their newest film Hollywood Stargirl, a sequel to the 2020 film Stargirl. Chip and Company got a sneak preview of the film and I’m here to give you our honest but spoiler-free review!

Hollywood Stargirl is about free spirit Stargirl Caraway (Grace VanderWaal), a silver-voiced teenager whose simple acts of kindness work magic in the lives of others. The upcoming film follows Stargirl’s journey out of Mica, Arizona, and into a bigger world of music, dreams, and possibilities. When her mother Ana (Judy Greer) is hired as the costume designer for a movie, they relocate to L.A., where Stargirl quickly becomes involved with an eclectic assortment of characters. They include aspiring filmmaking brothers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrel Jackson Williams); Mr. Mitchell (Judd Hirsch), one of Stargirl’s neighbors; and Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman), a musician Stargirl admires and encounters on her journey.

This film at the surface is already stacked with a star-studded cast, with Uma Thurman, Judd Hirsch, and Judy Greer taking the spotlight! No wonder they were cast in Hollywood Stargirl, they are the stars of Hollywood. Enough about the cast, lets’s get into the review, shall we?

The beginning of the film starts off with Stargirl and her mom Ana moving around different locations after leaving Mica. I think the biggest difference in these first few moments of the film, other than Stargirl’s amazing new pixie cut is the casting of her mom. If you remember from the first film Stargirl’s mom was played by Sara Arrington, and only appeared in the film for one or two scenes. So, this casting change may not be a shocker to fans of the first film but I definitely this change was for the best. You can see that in the film because Stargirl and Ana’s chemistry just radiates off the screen and that’s good casting (and acting)!

When Stargirl and Ana arrive in L.A. they move into a housing unit where they have some pretty talented neighbors. The first person they meet is Evan and Terrell’s mom who is super welcoming and introduces Stargirl and her mom to their new home. She even tells them about her sons who are trying to produce a film written by Evan. This immediately piques Stargirl’s interest and she tells their mom that she’s very excited to meet them.

I think this is another moment where fans of the first film might spot a luming red flag. If you haven’t seen the first film, this may be the time to stop reading and go watch the first film, and then come back and continue. I never said this was a spoiler-free of Stargirl, but you can definitely check that out in the link below before streaming!

The luring red flag is a comparison to the first film where Stargirl meets Leo and immediately changes his life for the better but then Stargirl disappears without a goodbye. Leo ends up getting heartbroken but believes Stargirl was this ‘alien’ or ‘angel’ brought to him for a reason. So immediately, in the first 10 minutes of Hollywood Stargirl, a thought arises, is Stargirl going to change Evan and Terrell’s life like she did to Leo and just leave them without a goodbye? Well, to find that out you will just have to watch Hollywood Stargirl on June 3rd!

After, Stargirl and her mom get settled in Ana immediately has to go to work and Stargirl is breaking into her new bedroom, in a very Stargirl-esk way, with music! In the midst of all this, Stargirl is startled when a rock is thrown at her window. When she walks over to find out who the culprit is, we find it’s her new neighbor’s son Evan.

Stargirl talks to Evan and he tells her all about the film he wrote and how he’s trying to find, not only a star for his film but also a musician, and after hearing Stargirl sing he thinks she is the perfect star for his scissor reel. After this encounter, we are introduced to another character which is Stargirl’s neighbor below her, Mr. Mitchell who comes off as a grumpy old man. But through the film, we start to realize how important he will eventually mean to Stargirl and her team.

Evan eventually introduces Stargirl to his older brother Terrell who is directing the film and together the three of them team up to produce this short film. Along the way, the team realizes that they need to produce a song for their reel and at first they wanted to use a song by famous singer Roxanne Martel but after talking to her through Terrell’s connection, they are inspired to write their own as they figure it out as they go.

With a motto like that, it seems to the team that Figure it Out as We Go is the perfect title for the song they are writing. This song is definitely a catchy song that is going to get everyone watching Hollywood Stargirl to add it to their Spotify and Apple Music libraries, I know I definitely will. It has an upbeat and alternative pop feeling to it and the lyrics are reminiscent of a young, carefree lifestyle a lot of people will be able to relate to.

Hollywood Stargirl is definitely different from its previous film, which had a magical and mystical feeling to it. Stargirl was seen through the eyes of Leo and was basically a mystery and almost never felt like she was actually there. But in Hollywood Stargirl Leo is not present, and we get to see life through Stargirl’s eyes. We get to see that Stargirl is a real girl with real feelings and real challenges that every teenage girl deals with growing up. And we all just have to figure it out as we go.

This film is a great example of a coming-of-age film and I think everyone, no matter if you’ve seen the first film or not, no matter what age, should dive into Stargirl’s story. So tune in to Disney+ on June 3rd, 2022 to stream Hollywood Stargirl!
