China wanted Sony to cut out the Statue of Liberty from Spider-Man: No Way Home

Following a request from the Chinese authorities, Sony refused to remove the footage of the Statue of Liberty from Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Sony ultimately rejected the request, resulting in Chinese authorities preventing the latest Spider-Man film from being released in the biggest film market in the world. According to reports, the film lost a potential $170 million-$340 million in sales from China.

However, with interest in American movies declining in China amid a surge in homegrown blockbuster films, Sony chose not to comply. No Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame has opened in China.

Despite never having been released in China, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” still became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, listed behind other blockbusters such as “Avatar,” “Titanic,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
