D23 Expo: Studio Panel Part 2 - The Live Action Side

Earlier I posted some of the small bits of news that came out of the Walt Disney Studio’s panel on the animation front. Now it’s time to take a look at some of the things that we’re talked about on the live action side. For now, a lot of the news was vague, but here’s a look at what’s coming soon from their live action department.

  • ‘John Carter’ is based on the famous sci-fi book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs that was first published in 1912.
  • The story follows a Civil War vet named John Carter who has lost everything that is dear to him, including himself. One day he wakes up in a new world, Mars, on the verge of war. John must finally realize his true purpose, who he is, and save the planet.
  • The film stars Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, as well as Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, and Samantha Morton.
  • Kitsch was very enthusiastic about the character and is really hoping “John Carter’ will do well so they can continue the series.
Disney’s ‘Frankenweenie’

  • Tim Burton‘s return to the stop motion world.
  • The movie is based off Tim Burton’s live action short film of the same name.
  • ‘Frankenweenie’ is a story about a  boy and his dog. One day his dog gets hit by a car and he decides to reanimate the dog, like the Frankenstein monster, so he can continue to have his dog.
  • Tim Burton was very influenced by the older, black and white horror movie look, and this film was shot in black and white to replicate it.
  • The cast is many of the usual Tim Burton’s collaborators including Winona Ryder, Martin Short, and Martin Landau.
  • Danny Elfman is scoring the film

  • Starring Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgarton, and CJ Adams.
  • The movie revolves around a married couple who can’t conceive, and one night decide to write the ten things they’d want in their child on pieces of paper. When they finish, they put the list in a box and bury it in their backyard, trying to start their lives fresh. But after a freak accident, they discover a boy who is their perfect child, whose name is Timothy Green, and he’s anything but normal. Timothy’s arrival shakes up their lives, and will change it forever.
  • Jennifer Garner is very excited about the movie, and gushed about CJ Adams, who plays Timothy.
  • Says the movie is one all families will love.
Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful
  • March 2013.
  • The film is a prequel to the original ‘Wizard of Oz’ and tells the story of how a traveling showman ended up in Oz and became the great and powerful Oz the world would know.
  • Sam Raimi, director of the ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy is directing, with James Franco in the role of Oz. The rest of the cast includes, Rachel Weisz, Zach Braff, Michelle Williams, and Mila Kunis.
  • The movie will show us many of the places we knew from the original Oz, but they will be different. Time will change them.

  • Everyone has been having fun shooting, and are all very proud to be a part of this movie, and the expanding Marvel universe.
The Disney live action films section really gave us some very cool new inside looks into some of the movies we have coming over the next few years. I’ll have a post later on my reactions to some of the things we were shown. There is a lot to look forward to coming soon, and I honestly can’t wait.
Thank you D23 Media for the photos.
