Jude Law Speaks Out after Johnny Depp was Forced to Leave the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Franchise. Fans were shocked to learn Johnny Depp had been asked to resign as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts films by Warner Bros. after the loss of his libel case against UK’s The Sun who labeled Depp as a “wife beater” and wrote salacious articles about the award winning actor. Depp’s Fantastic Beasts co-star Jude Law was as surprised by the news as anyone and shared that despite his personal feelings on the matter, ultimately he would have to “defer to the studio” in the decision.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Law shared, “In a situation like this, you defer to the studio. That’s all you can do. Because you have to turn up and play your part. It was unusual for me because, in fact, on this particular role. Johnny had actually only done a day’s filming, I think, on his own. In a franchise like this, it’s the studio and the company that make the big decisions. And you have to go along with those, because we’re just a member of the team.”
Though it has yet to be confirmed by the studio, the thought is that Depp was brought in to film his “exit” scene that will be edited to usher in whomever takes on the role of Grindelwald for the future of the franchise. Previously, Johnny Depp was signed on for a 5 film contract with Warner Bros, so we are well aware Grindelwald’s epic duel with Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore will not come to fruition for quite some time, but it is assumed the replacement will take on the remainder of Depp’s previous contract.
Currently, Mads Mikkelsen is rumored to be Warner Bros. first choice to step into the role, but no official changes have been announced at this time. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for updates and all things Wizarding World!
