Special delivery! Earlier this week we received news that an endangered white male rhino calf was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park. Now, we’ve got an even better update: a first view of the baby himself!
The baby does not have a name yet, but he is bonding well with his mother, Kendi. Since his birth on October 25th, he has been growing in curiosity and sparring skills, as well as enjoying his afternoon naps. In the weeks to come, he will eventually join other rhinos like him on Kilimanjaro Safaris.
White Rhinoceroses are the second-largest land mammal. Males can grow to be 5,100 pounds! They also span somewhere between 5 ft 6 and 6 ft 1 in height up to their shoulders. White rhinos live to be 40 to 50 years old. Kendi carried her baby for between 16 and 18 months before he was born.
White Rhinos have been in the ”near threatened” category for several years due to protection and management after they were thought to be extinct. The discovery of a small population in 1895 brought an effort to conserve the species. Today, somewhere close to 20,000 white rhinos are in existence, a far cry from the 100 that inhabited this earth just a century ago. Disney Conservation has committed to saving wildlife like the White Rhino.
Congratulations to Kendi and all of Disney’s Animal Kingdom on their beautiful new addition! We hope to see more updates soon as well as learn the little one’s name. Not to mention getting to see him on Kilimanjaro Safaris!
