A tropical disturbance approaching the Windward Islands has a chance to become a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast cone shows Florida directly in its projected path. If it develops, the storm will be called Isaias.
The system is still trying to organize as its center is still too poorly defined to be considered a tropical storm. Regardless, meteorologists believe heavy rain and gusty winds are likely across the Leeward Islands on Wednesday. It will spread westward to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Wednesday night and last through Thursday.
As of Wednesday morning, a tropical storm warning was issued for the north coast of Haiti. A warning was issued for the northern border of the Dominican Republic as well. The Bahamas government issued a tropical storm watch for several islands including the Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, the Inaguas, Mayaguana, and the Ragged Islands.
Computer models show the system heading toward Florida and the Bahamas by the weekend. Florida remains in the cone of uncertainty for what is expected to become Tropical Storm Isaias, but the track has shifted slightly west and south with a landfall now forecast in the Florida Keys late Saturday into early Sunday.
