It’s been eighteen weeks since most major movie theaters closed down due to COVID-19. There’s been no new films arriving at AMC Theatres, Cinemark, or Regal. However, they are enticing movies goers to visit drive-in theaters during this pandemic with classic film offerings. Last week, both Iron Man (2008) and the live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017) topped the box office.
Disney’s reissue of 2017’s Beauty and the Beast led all titles with an estimated $467K at 527 locations. Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man was second with $430K at 462 sites. Beauty and the Beast ranked No. 1 in its first weekends of the box office, opening to $174.7M on March 17, 2017. The movie continues to hold the March record for the best domestic opening ever; its running lifetime cume now at an estimated $504.5M.
There are some small theater chains open to guests, but most of this week’s revenue came from drive-in theaters. Unfortunately, most of this year’s planned releases are being pushed back to later this year or 2021. For instance, Disney pushed back the release of Black Widow and the live-action Mulan to later this year. Their highly anticipated Jungle Cruise movie is now scheduled for July 2021. We hope to see these films when they finally hit theaters!
