Josh Gad Refuses To Replace Danny DeVito as Phil in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Hercules’

Josh Gad Refuses To Replace Danny DeVito as Phil in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Hercules‘. Disney fans were elated to hear the news that a live-action Hercules is in the works and many have already shared their “dream cast” online. The hype really picked up steam after Ariana Grande’s performance of “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” during the ABC Disney Family Singalong and now the world over is speculating on who will be cast in the fan favorite Disney film.

One such speculation suggested that Frozen and Beauty and the Beast star, Josh Gad, had been cast as Hercules coach, Philoctetes (Phil), but Gad was quick to squash those rumors and shared that there is only one man for the job. Danny DeVito.

Josh shared a clip of Phil from the animated feature film with the caption, “Lol. No. No No. I will not be playing Phil. There is only one man who should be playing Phil and his name is Danny DeVito.”

Danny DeVito is known for many films and television appearances, but arguably one of his most iconic roles was in fact Phil from the animated 90’s feature film. Disney has not shied away from having various actors reprise their roles in other live-action adaptation, most notably, James Earl Jones as Mufasa in The Lion King (2019), so the idea is not so farfetched as some may believe.

This week, Hercules was confirmed to be in the works by Disney and duo Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame), aka The Russo Brothers, have announced they will be producing the live-action hero flick via Instagram. The film is rumored to include the original soundtrack as well as some new songs penned by award-winning composer Alan Menken, who has actively been working on adapting Hercules for Broadway.

Though no formal casting decisions have been announced, most (if not all) of the internet is in agreement that Danny DeVito is the only man who could bring Phil to life on the big screen for a second time. Who would be in your “dream cast” for Disney’s live-action Hercules? Do you think Danny DeVito should reprise his role, or should the character be replaced with a fresh face? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
